Braised Minced Meat and Potato

This is a dish I came across here at hawker centres here in Singapore, more specifically at caifan or economy rice stalls. It’s a great complement to your rice, filling and hearty, packed with protein and flavor.

Servings: 2
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 250g minced pork (or any meat of choice)

  • 1 large potato

  • 2 tbsp light soy sauce

  • 1 tbsp dark soy sauce

  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce

  • 1 tbsp rice wine

  • 1 tbsp sesame oil

  • 1 tbsp minced garlic

  • 1/2 tbsp sugar

  • 2 tbsp oil

  • 1/2 cup water

  • Cornstarch slurry (1 tsp cornstarch, 2 tbsp water)

  • Green onion for garnish

Instructions

  1. Slice the potato into half-centimeter pieces or according to preference. The thinner they are, the faster they will cook.

  2. To make the sauce, mix light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice wine, sesame oil, minced garlic and sugar. Set aside.

  3. Add oil to a heated pan and saute the minced meat until lightly browned.

  4. Add the potato slices and saute together, then mix in the sauce.

  5. Add 1/2 cup of water and cover the pan with a lid. Simmer for about 8-9 minutes or until the potato slices are fork-tender.

  6. Pour in the cornstarch slurry and mix in to thicken the sauce.

  7. Garnish with green onion.
